The Purple Crow lidar is operated from the University of Ontario's Environmental research field station, located near London, Ontario (Canada). The site is located at 225 m above sea level and at the corrdinates 43.07°N, 81.38°W.

A seeded Nd:YAG laser produces a 30 Hz, 1000 mJ per pulse 532 nm beam. The return signals are observed at the same wavelength for Rayleigh backscattering (temperature), together with observations at 607 nm for nitrogen and 660 nm for water vapour. The lidar receiver system furthermore makes use of a rotating liquid mercury telescope of 2.65 m in diameter, which is unique in the NDACC lidar working group.
